NEW MOON IN CANCER
In an Arabic Lunar Mansion that challenges comfort
On July 14, we have a New Moon in the cardinal water sign Cancer. Ruled by the Moon, Cancer represents the maternal, instinctual, nurturing, and a deep connection with our home(land), ancestry and family. Cancer doesn’t like conflicts, but when it comes to defending loved ones, a cause that is important, or one’s home, beware the fierce fighter that is hidden beneath Cancer’s sensitive exterior.
With Mercury retrograde co-present in Cancer, there is a clear emphasis on the emotional instead of the rational side, and the risk of not seeing clearly when perceived notions triumph over objectivity. Cancer tends to brood and compensate for emotional distress and lack with an overindulgence in comfort eating/ shopping or internalizing feelings instead of finding an outlet. There has to be a balance or else the weight of the world can get too much, which is especially relevant in these times when it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer craziness of the world. The square with Saturn in Aries is a tense aspect that can feel like our patience is being tested, or we may not get what we look for. The important thing is to understand how we can nurture ourselves, and become grounded instead of allowing external events to affect us deeply and viscerally.
The New Moon takes place in an Arabic Lunar Mansion called the Glance of the Lion’s Eye or the Gaze. It’s associated with confrontation with authority, frustrations, disappointment and defense. This is not so much a truly negative place, but more like a signal for increasing self-reliance and strengthening one’s defenses, which also touches upon health. Where do we find a lack of nurturing in the broadest sense, what do we need in order to feel strengthened and “well fed“, and what do we need to do, or revisit (Mercury retrograde has entered the chat), for more security? Themes of family, home and hearth, or ancestry can become prominent now, inspiring internal growth and understanding.
